Two nights ago Claire didn't sleep very well. Last night we put her down at 7:30 and we were headed to bed by 8:00. At 8:20 I got a text message that changed my plans. "Yay tsunami watch" from Brooke. So we turn on the TV to see the horrifying video of water rushing up over Japan. Justin went to get water, we left Claire sleeping, and I instantly came to watch the news. Within an hour my phone wasn't working anymore and we knew we had until 3:00 am to get prepared.
Last year, when I was pregnant, we had another tsunami from an earthquake in Chile. Justin had to go to work that day and I was in a full state of panic. Last night he went to bed and I stayed up to panic. Claire woke up at 12:00 am and I went and got in bed with her to make her go back to sleep. I woke up at 1:40 and thought we need to leave our house. We don't live in an evacuation or flood zone but I got scared. I grabbed her food and everything that was important and not replaceable and put it in the car. Woke Justin up and went and banged on Jeremy and Nikki's door. But, they closed the roads at 2:00 so we were stuck at home. All I could picture when I was laying Claire back down was the movie Titanic and the poor mom putting her babies to bed while their room filled with water. I'm a freak, I know, but after the video of Japan I wanted to throw up.
As the timer got smaller I wanted to throw up even more. Jeremy and Nikki came over and we watched the news until about 4:00. The freakiest thing was when the water pulled so far back from the beach and the reef was exposed. I just could imagine the water rushing up and taking the idiot standing there watching...in 2010 some guy was playing in the water! Who does that?!?!
When we saw that nothing big was happening and I felt it was safe for me to close my eyes we went to bed. There might not have been any damage here but better safe than sorry. I just hope that the fact that this has happened twice in two years that people don't ever stop taking it seriously. It's a downfall of living on an island but natural disasters can and do happen anywhere. I just am going to start some serious praying that we don't have to experience it again for awhile.
Thanks for your prayers for Hawaii's safety. Keep praying for Japan!
